Groundwater, the water present beneath the Earth's surface, plays a significant role in geotechnical engineering. It influences the behavior of soil and rock formations, impacting the stability and performance of various civil engineering structures.
Key impacts of groundwater on geotechnical engineering include: Soil Strength and Deformation:
  • Effective stress: Groundwater pressure reduces the effective stress acting on soil particles, leading to decreased shear strength.
  • Consolidation: Saturated soils can undergo significant consolidation when subjected to loading, as the water within the pores gradually dissipates.
  • Hydrostatic pressure: High groundwater pressures can contribute to slope instability and foundation failures.
Seepage and Erosion:Water flowing through soil can exert significant seepage forces, potentially leading to erosion and piping failures.
